The Hooded Horseman is a Golden Age Western comic-book hero, best known from
anthology comics of the late 1940s and early 1950s.
The Hooded Horseman is a
mysterious masked rider who roams the American frontier fighting injustice.
Wearing a hood to conceal his identity, he protects settlers and the innocent
while battling outlaws, corrupt officials, and criminals.
The character
clearly follows the tradition of masked Western heroes similar to The Lone
Ranger, emphasizing frontier justice, secrecy and mystery, bravery and moral
righteousness.
Stories featuring the Hooded Horseman were typically
serious in tone, focusing on action, gunfights, and dramatic confrontations.
Era: Late 1940s–early 1950s.
Publisher: American Comics Group (ACG).
Main appearances: "Blazing West"
and other ACG Western anthology titles.
The character was created during
the height of Western popularity in American entertainment, when films, radio
shows, and comics frequently featured masked lawmen and vigilantes. Anthology
comics allowed publishers to test such characters without giving them their own
standalone titles.
Although the Hooded Horseman never became as famous as
some Western icons, he remained a regular and recognizable feature in ACG’s
Western comics for several years.
