She: leaves her oppressive home, cares for a sick, disgraced girl named Cissy Gay, shocks her family by proposing marriage to Barney Snaith, a mysterious man rumored to be immoral
Barney and Valancy live simply on Mistawis Island, where Valancy finds joy, love, and freedom for the first time. Later she learns that her diagnosis was a mistake, she is healthy and has a full life ahead, Barney is actually wealthy and of good character, with secrets about his past.
The novel ends happily, with Valancy realizing that her “Blue Castle”, the life she dreamed of, has become real through courage, honesty, and love.
